| In Nicaragua you still see a lot of remnants of the Soviet era in various forms. There are still a lot of Lada's, for example, roaming around on the streets of Managua. I've ridden in a Lada taxi before and the ride is what you would expect from a car built by communists, namely, uncomfortable and generally crappy. Being built in Russia, Lada's aren't really designed for tropical climates. One of the "accessories" you see frequently is the fan mounted to the dashboard. These don't really do much other than spread the funk of the driver around the car more thoroughly but, hey, they look cool and that's all that matters. |

When my wife gets to the United States one of the things I'm really going to miss is going to San Juan Del Sur on a regular basis. It really is a great little town and the beach is a slice of heaven. The highlight for my wife is when the candy lady comes by with her basket of candy on her head. She always ends up buying a ton of candy and haggling over the prices for 20 minutes. I think half the fun of buying things in Latin America is the haggling.

After spending the day at the beach and before coming home we took a run to the Costa Rican border at Puenas Blancas. We really didn't have a reason other than I wanted to see what was the there. The answer turns out to be, not much, so we headed back home to Managua.
