On Friday we headed to Acoyapa for the night. The hardcore Sandinista's were already out in force since Saturday was the anniversary of the Sandinista overthrow of the Somoza's. While we were in Acoyapa I went out and did a little exploring. One of the places I always wanted to check out is the river where people get water, wash their clothes, take a bath, swim, etc. Sure enough when a got there a woman was in the middle of the river beating clothes on a rock. I got quite a shock while I was wandering around when I came upon a totally naked woman taking a bath. She seemed to care less that I was there but I apologized profusely for interrupting anyway. I guess when the river is your bathtub you don't expect much privacy.

I take a lot of photos in Acoyapa because, to be honest, I'm usually bored out of my skull while I'm there. There's no internet and the TV is always tuned to cartoons so I generally just kill time by taking pictures and observing what's going on. While I was watching cartoons with the kids the lady from the electric company came by to drop off the bill. Since no one trusts the mail in Nicaragua all the utility companies deliver the bills by hand. Even in Managua where the mail service at least exists they still drop off the bills rather than mailing them.

If you're ever in Nicaragua on the day of the revolution keep in mind that it's a lousy day to drive anywhere. The reason being that the Sandinista's bus (and truck) in their supporters from all over the country for a big celebration and it causes massive traffic jams. It's a very weird holiday. About 60% to 70% of the country total ignores it while the remainder go absolutely bonkers. It would be like if only Republicans celebrated the 4th of July in the United States.
One thing the Sandinista's (and Socialists and Communists in general) are great at is organizing mobs. Of course, no one knows where the money for the 800 or so busses came from but I digress. I have to wonder how many of these people were just there for the free trip to Managua and how many were true supporters. The Sandinistas do this kind of stuff all the time. They throw big parties with bands, food, and drink and then tout them as evidence of how much support they have. It's sort of similar to what a certain Presedential candidate in the US is doing... |

I guess it's no secret that I think Daniel Ortega is one of the biggest, most corrupt, slimeballs in the world. When he oozes back into the swamp he crawled out of Nicaragua will be much better off. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening any time soon so to properly honor him I named my wireless network "ortega_sucks". Now, when all the FSLN nazi's in my neighborhood fire up their computers they get to see ortega sucks in their list of wireless networks. :) Not that anyone cares what I think but it's my own little protest against a horrible human being.
